The project comprised works to strengthen, protect and landscape the abutments of the Sheepmount Bridge as it crosses the River Caldew, close to the point at which it joins the river Eden.
The revetment repairs involved driving steel sheet piles into the bedrock and creating a concrete structure to stabilise and strengthen the abutments to the bridge. The concrete structure was topped with gabion baskets and landscaped. Soft engineering works were required downstream of the bridge to stabilise the embankment and encourage the growth of natural vegetation.
During the operations, the busy adjacent Sheepmount sports facility and public park remained open, therefore the bridge was in use constantly.
