Saltom, Pit in Whitehaven was the first under-sea coal mine in Britain, but its iconic pit head building had fallen into disrepair.
The project, a joint venture between English Heritage and Copeland Borough Council, involved the sensitive restoration of a badly damaged sea wall at Saltom Pit – the oldest undersea pit in the world.
Using a combination of stone supports techniques, reinforced concrete and gabion baskets we were able to protect the structure from further erosion by the sea and preserve this historical monument for future generations.
